Microbial metatranscriptomics

Background

Metatranscriptomics, the study of gene expression of microbes in a natural environment, provides a host of information on the functional diversity, redundancy, and potential of microbial ecosystems as well as their impact on human health and disease. One of the major challenges to metatranscriptomic analysis is accounting for differences in the microbial ecosystem (and therefore the functional potential of the community) in interpreting differential gene expression data. My work in this area involves finding techniques for accounting for these differences as well as identifying signatures of microbial pre and post transcriptional regulation of functions that are important for promoting health.
